Nelson Mandela
Nelson was born on July 18, 1918 and died December 5, 2013 because of lung illness. He was first black president in South Africa and retired in 1999. He was in prison from 1962 to 1990. Nelson's father gave him the name Rolihlahla and meant trouble maker. However, when Nelson was at the age of 7 he began to learn his British education and his teacher gave him an 'American name'; Nelson. When Nelson's father died he was sent to live with the leader of the Thembu tribe. He was so active in the political system in his tribe and listened in the conversations. During the break of college he ran away to Johannesburg because of an arranged marriage. As he was there he noticed a big racial divided meant and gave a first hand of life to him.
Nelson entered the A.N.C. to speak up for blacks but in 1952 the government was feeling threated because Mandela was having a strong voice to the public. He lost his freedom of speech by getting a ban to not speak in any public meetings and only can speak to 1 person at a time about governmental things. Sooner people realized that Nelson went underground he became silent and couldn't speak. Nelson tried to escape but was captured. Then Nelson and 7 others were arrested because of a conspiracy to over throw the government and went to prison on Robben Island. Later some more controversy in 1976 of black students protesters killed by security, the whole world was watching and this was a time when we needed Nelson. He wasn't just a hero but a symbol all around the world. There where rallies and protests, Nelson was finally free nearly 30 years later at the age of 71. He finally help the voices that were once unheard and won the: Noble Peace Prize. He then was elected to be the first black president in South Africa.
I can take a stand of like Nelson did by speaking even when people feel threated or take a stand in bulling or any other brave thing that makes you different from any other person. An example of a brave act is, specking up to people when they think their better about us and making people feel bad because there's one thing better and different about them. I can also be an advocate by speaking up about segregation at school and even if its the teachers and they wont do anything, I will tell everyone who feels that way to skip school to show people we cant be treated differently just because our color of our skin, our accents ,our dreams or religion.
